The Soul Behind the Canvas: About John Danks
John Danks is an artist and facilitator whose work bridges creative expression, healing, and recovery. With a foundation in oil portrait painting, he brings a deep sensitivity to the human experience, using art as a means of connection, reflection, and transformation.
For over seven years, John facilitated an art cart program at St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, working closely with young patients and their families. Through guided art-making, he created space for children facing serious illness to express emotions that often cannot be put into words, helping to ease anxiety and foster moments of creativity, dignity, and joy. His commitment to therapeutic art extends into the recovery community, where he has led art expression groups in multiple rehabilitation settings.
He currently facilitates art expression at PRO-ACT Recovery Center, supporting individuals in recovery as they explore identity, meaning, and healing through the creative process. Drawing from both his personal meditation practice and his experience in expressive arts, John’s approach emphasizes presence, authenticity, and the restorative power of making. His work reflects a belief that art is not only something to be viewed, but something to be lived, as a pathway toward understanding, resilience, and connection.
